A roundtable discussion titled "COP29: Initiatives and Challenges for a Green Future under the Azerbaijani Presidency" was held at the Romanian-American University

An event entitled ‘COP29: Initiatives and Challenges for a Green Future under the Azerbaijani Presidency’, organised jointly by the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Romania and the Romanian-American University, was held in the Senate Hall of the University. The event was attended by the university administration, representatives of Romanian think tanks, as well as foreign and local students studying at the university.

In his opening speech, the Rector of the University, Professor Costel Negricea, underlined the importance of holding an event dedicated to Azerbaijan's presidency of COP29 at his institution on the eve of COP29 in terms of establishing a dialogue between the academic community, scientific and governmental institutions and informing them about the event. He spoke about the university's participation in scientific projects aimed at protecting the ecology of our planet, climate change and its consequences.

Ambassador of Republic of Azerbaijan to Romania Gudsi Osmanov informed the participants of the event about the strategic goals, approaches and priorities of our country within COP29, co-operation with global companies in renewable energy projects in the field of green energy, and the prospects of the Caspian-European Union Green Energy Corridor. The diplomat also highlighted initiatives that will bring innovation to the COP process from Azerbaijan and provided extensive information on the establishment of the Climate Finance Action Fund (CFAF), the Global Call for a Ceasefire and other initiatives. He called on young people to be more responsible in protecting nature and the environment.

President of the Romanian Sustainable Fuels Association Vlad Stoicescu stated in his speech that the natural disasters occurring in the world, mainly in Europe, are caused by climate change and touched upon the essence of the initiatives put forward by Azerbaijan. He assessed Azerbaijan's participation in alternative hydrogen and green energy projects as an indicative step for all countries in the region as a gas producing and supplying country. V. Stoicescu noted the importance of taking global measures to reduce traditional resources used by mankind for energy production in order to prevent environmental pollution, as well as discussion of environmental problems by world leaders at platforms such as COP29.

Ioana Vasiliu, a researcher at Energy Policy Group, one of the leading energy think tanks in Romania, gave information about the planned participation of representatives of Romanian NGOs in COP29. Emphasising that combating climate change is one of the priority areas of activity for Romania, Vasiliu talked about the contributions of the state and non-governmental organisations to the field of ecology.

Salatin Shamilova, a doctoral student at the University of Bucharest, made a presentation on the big screen about the declaration of 2024 as the ‘Year of Solidarity for a Green World’ in Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan's preparations for COP29. Meanwhile, an exhibition on Azerbaijan's green energy policy was held at the entrance to the Senate Hall.
